Got Energy Drinks?

It seems as though energy drinks have become the norm just about everywhere these days...both inside and outside the gym. So what's the big fuss about, and why is every other teenager sipping on a monster energy drink or a red bull?

Well, I really couldn't explain this answer entirely...but I do know the quick energy jolt can become a border line addiction.

Manufacturers claim that the supplement can replace both water and energy during vigorous exercise. They also make such claims as being able to contribute to muscle growth and repair through the added creatine and amino acids some drinks contain.

Although there is little scientific support that back these claims...people seem to be drinking energy supplements like there's no tomorrow. Sales are expected to pass the 10-Billion Dollar mark by 2010.

I can't knock on energy drinks entirely as I enjoy a few drinks from time-to-time (except for the price). I have to admit that the energy boost will come in handy when really needed...such as before a brutal workout, or an early morning meeting at the office.

So what are these drinks made of exactly?

Most manufacturers will use a combination of methylxanthines (including caffeine), B vitamins, and other exotic herbal ingredients. They'll also include ingredients such as caffeine, guarana (extracts from the guarana plant) or taurine plus various forms of ginseng, maltodextrin, inositol, carnitine, creatine, glucuronolactone and ginkgo biloba.

Some contain high levels of sugar...while most brands also offer an artificially sweetened version...which the medical side-effects are still to be determined.
